The famed author, Roald Dahl (himself a member of the RAF), spread the story of the gremlins to a worldwide audience in his book of that same name (the characters in the film, Gremlins, were roughly based on Dahl's description of the gremlins). I am pretty sure that it WAS a coincidence, though, as you see the film, Gremlins, took the name of their titular monsters from a very popular mythical creature that had long been used to explain when things went wrong with pilots while flying.
